Barcelona president Bartomeu ‘will offer’ Messi two-year contract during upcoming meeting

Some potential insight into what will take place during the meeting of FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi’s father has been provided recently.

Messi’s father set for showdown talks

Earlier this month, following Barcelona’s 8-2 drubbing at the hands of Bayern Munich, news began to emerge that Messi had informed the Catalan outfit of his desire to leave.

The main issue in any potential exit, though, comes in the form of Messi’s contract, which is understood to maintain a clause, allowing him to leave for free at the end of any given season, provided that sufficient notice is provided.

To use this clause during a normal campaign, Messi is reportedly required to inform Barca of his desire to move on in May. This year, however, owing to the pandemic, Barca believe that their star man should have done so in June.

As a result, Barca are maintaining that Messi’s €700m release clause is still active.

This stance was then officially backed by La Liga over the weekend, with the payment of the aforementioned release clause therefore seemingly representing Messi’s only way out of the Camp Nou at present.

Official statement by La Liga. They side with Barcelona in Leo Messi contract battle: “Current deal is still valid and paying release clause for €700m is the only way out”.

Messi to be offered two-year deal

With Barcelona seemingly holding firm in their stance, a meeting between Messi’s father and representative, Jorge, will reportedly take place later this week.

Wednesday was the date originally being reported for said talks, though some outlets now state it could be Thursday.

Regardless of the date, as mentioned above, some insight into what will happen during the meeting has recently come to light.

As per ESPN’s Barcelona correspondent, Josep Maria Bartomeu is set to offer Messi a two-year deal during the talks.

However, Jorge will ask that Messi is allowed to leave for free.

No matter what happens at the meeting, though, it seems as though Messi believes his time at the Camp Nou is up.

The forward has already failed to show up for a Covid-19 test over the weekend and has also been fined for missing training on Monday.
