Atletico Madrid players caught criticising referee unaware of audio cameras listening in

‘Terrible idiot’

Atletico Madrid were frustrated by a Lokomotiv Moscow side who could have themselves stole the win at the end of the game. A match in which the current La Liga title chasers dominated, they were unable to break down the Russian side.

Atleti had a goal ruled out for offside when Koke was deemed to have been in an illegal position tapping home Yannick Carrasco’s rebounded strike.

However, bizarrely, in the tunnel, a camera picked up audio between Jose Gimenez and Angel Correa talking about the referee Slavko Vincic.

“It’s a terrible idiot,” says Gimenez speaking about the official. To which Correa responds, “He starts talking in Russian with the others.” The Uruguayan agrees saying, “It’s true. Speak the other’s language. You know what? All weird.”

The strange conversation was brought to a close by Saul Niguez who points out that the they are being watched and listened to. “Cameras with audio,” says Saul to which Gimenez turns and gives a guilty look straight into the camera.

Nothing has yet been brought to light whether the players will face any sanctions for their comments.

Simeone pays tribute

Diego Simeone spoke after his Atleti side were held in Madrid to remember his Argentina teammate Diego Maradona.

“It’s hard. When they call you on the phone and tell you that Diego passed away, you think, ‘Diego cannot die’,” Simeone said in the post-match press conference.

“A myth is leaving us, an Argentine who transmitted all his rebellion to fight with his positive and negative things, but always going forward. The way to get excited about playing soccer was by looking at him.

“He welcomed me in a spectacular way in Seville, I was young. The moment they tell you about this situation [Maradona dying] you say, ‘It can’t be, he can always come out.’

“This time he could not, but he will always be with us, especially with the Argentines, he is a myth and it gives us a lot of sadness and emptiness – it cannot be. A very strong hug for his closest family and a lot of pain.”
