Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli provides positive injury update

Arsenal youngster Gabriel Martinelli has, on Monday, confirmed that he is closing on a return to the pitch.

Gunners switch

Versatile attacker Martinelli of course made the move to the Emirates last summer, from his home country of Brazil.

With Arsenal having also secured the high-profile additions of the likes of Dani Ceballos, Kieran Tierney and Nicolas Pepe, though, Martinelli’s arrival slipped somewhat under the radar.

The campaign that ensued, however, saw the South American prodigy stand out as arguably the most consistent of the Gunners’ batch of summer signings.

Despite his tender years, Martinelli already looks a genuine star in the making.

The youngster possesses all of the desirable traits of a modern attacker, combining touch, stature, poise, pace, the ability to beat opposing defenders and, perhaps most significantly of all, a real eye for goal.

This allowed Martinelli to directly contribute to a remarkable 10 goals across 9 appearances between the League Cup and Europa League in 2019/20.

In addition, crucially, he began to carry his goalscoring exploits onto the Premier League stage earlier this year, with key strikes versus the likes of Sheffield United and Chelsea.

‘Feeling very well’

As such, it no doubt came as a major blow to club and player alike when, on the back of football’s return in June, word was forthcoming that Martinelli was set for a considerable spell on the sidelines.

The 19-year-old was forced under the knife, to fix a lingering knee problem.

In turn, he has now not taken to the pitch for a single appearance since all the way back in February.

But, as outlined above, if the latest update on the part of the attacker himself is anything to go by, then Arsenal’s fans should not have to wait too much longer to see a player who was quickly developing into something of a cult hero last season back in action.

Speaking in an interview with Arsenal Player earlier today, Martinelli was drawn on the current status of his recovery.

And the former Ituano man went on to confirm that he is making solid progress towards a return to the pitch, with his knee feeling ‘better’:

‘I’m feeling very well, I’m regaining confidence and I can feel my knee is better.’

‘After an injury like this you are kind of scared to force the knee again but the past couple of weeks it has been fine and soon I can start training with the ball.’

On the situation at the Emirates at present, meanwhile, Martinelli continued:

‘I think we have an excellent squad and along with Mikel’s forward-thinking and winning mentality we can carry on doing well.’

‘We are playing well and training well, everyone wants to win and we are all giving everything. I believe this season is very promising.’

‘We won trophies last season and I believe we can win this season again and also qualify for the Champions League.’
