Arsenal reportedly still working on pair of defensive exits/Guendouzi hints at Gunners future

The latest word stemming from the media suggests that as many as two defenders could yet depart the Emirates before tonight’s transfer deadline.

Arteta’s defensive options

The situation at the heart of Arsenal’s backline is a somewhat precarious one at present.

This comes with the Gunners, for the first time in some time, having a wealth of quality options at their disposal.

The early weeks of the new season have seen the trio of summer signing Gabriel Magalhaes, the rejuvenated Rob Holding and Kieran Tierney impress as part of a back-3.

David Luiz, meanwhile, has looked much improved since the arrival of Mikel Arteta in north London, with Sead Kolasinac having also been tested in a more central role of late.

Incredibly, all of Pablo Mari, who impressed in limited minutes last season, Shkodran Mustafi, Calum Chambers and Sokratis Papastathopoulos also remain on the books of the Gunners.

Finally, youngster William Saliba, widely tipped as a star of the future, is continuing to work towards fully adapting to his new surroundings in England.

Sokratis on the way out?

As such, evidently, when it comes to the central-defensive situation at Arsenal, something simply must give.

A number of the Gunners’ stoppers have been linked with departures of late, with Chambers reportedly of interest to Fulham, Holding a target for Newcastle, and Mustafi tipped to join Lazio.

If the latest update doing the rounds in the English media on Monday night is to be believed, however, then it is in fact another pair of Arteta’s centre-halves who look closest to the Emirates exit door.

The players in question? Sokratis and William Saliba.

As per Sam Dean of the Telegraph, ‘it is still possible’ that both defenders could be on the move before tonight’s transfer deadline.

Whilst the former would likely come in the form of a permanent departure, Saliba, on the other hand, would no doubt simply be loaned out, to gain further first-team experience.

Guendouzi latest

In other news relating to a Gunners exit this evening, meanwhile, Matteo Guendouzi has seemingly hinted that his time in north London may not yet be up.

Frenchman Guendouzi completed a loan switch to Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin earlier today, after falling heavily out of favour under Mikel Arteta over last season’s run-in.

In turn, it had been suggested that the midfielder’s time as an Arsenal player was likely up, with the Gunners expected to seek out a permanent sale next summer.

However, if Guendouzi’s latest social media activity is anything to go by, then all hope of a future at the Emirates may not yet be lost.

The 21-year-old this evening retweeted a number of posts from Arsenal fans, one of which pointed towards a return to the Gunners’ fold down the line:
