Arsenal legend believes Mohamed Elneny is matching Thomas Partey’s quality in midfield

Arsenal down Man United

The weekend’s marquee Premier League clash saw Arsenal and Manchester United face off.

United headed into the tie on a fine run of form which had seen them put five past RB Leipzig in the Championship League a few days prior.

Arsenal, meanwhile, had looked ok of late but their record away to the ‘big six’ clubs was of course a concern for the Gunners ahead of kick-off at Old Trafford.

Despite generally struggling against the bigger teams, though, Arsenal would dominate the majority of the tie on Sunday.

And the north Londoners were eventually rewarded for their efforts 69 minutes in when Pierre-Emerick stepped up to convert a spot-kick afforded to Arsenal after Paul Pogba fouled Hector Bellerin.

Mikel Arteta’s side were then able to hold on for a 1-0 win, picking up their first league away win against a ‘big six’ side since 2015.

Keown praises Elneny

On the day, Arsenal had a number of standout stars.

Their new additions, Thomas Partey and Gabriel, were particularly impressive.

But one man whose display does look to have gone under the radar somewhat is Mohamed Elneny.

Since returning from his loan in Turkey, the Egyptian has looked much improved and is putting on solid 7/10 displays whenever he plays.

And following the victory over United, Arsenal legend Martin Keown has been heaping praise on Elneny, going as far as to claim he is matching the quality of Thomas Partey:

“I was blessed to play behind some outstanding pairings in an Arsenal shirt, including Patrick Vieira and Emmanuel Petit and Vieira and Gilberto Silva. It’s an incredibly important job to act as that screen in front of the defence and Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey were solid here.

“There has been a lot of attention on Partey as the summer signing, but Elneny is matching his new team-mate’s quality in midfield.”
