Arsenal ‘hoping to wrap up’ George Lewis deal following Chelsea clash/Willian latest

The latest speculation stemming from the English media suggests that Arsenal are hopeful of closing a deal for free agent winger George Lewis as early as next week.

Lewis’ struggles

Lewis, a 20-year-old winger, has spent his career to date plying his trade chiefly in the lower divisions in his home country of Norway.

The Rwandan-born teen began his career on the books of Tromso IL, before dropping down to 3rd-tier outfit Tromsdalen.

Lewis was soon on the move once more, though, when he departed the Tromso region for Fram Larvik.

The pacy wide-man, who can play on either flank but is primarily utilised on the right, also spent time in England, when, according to Footbal.London, he trained with 5th-tier outfit Solihull Moors, with Lewis thought to have enjoyed a short spell on trial with Ipswich earlier this year, too.

After failing to earn himself a contract, though, the youngster returned to his home country, where Lewis has since remained as a free agent.

Arsenal bound

As outlined above, however, while Lewis’ first attempts to carve out a path for himself in English football went awry, the Norwegian, who has yet to be capped at any level by his country, now looks set to be handed the chance to impress at one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

The wide-man’s destination? Arsenal.

Rumours surrounding the possibility of Lewis making the move to the Emirates first began to circulate in May.

In something of a bolt from the blue, Jostein Jensen, sporting director of the teen’s former club Fram Larvik, revealed:

‘I have been told that he (Lewis) has signed for Arsenal.’

Jensen, evidently, jumped the gun in suggesting that a deal had already been sealed, but, as outlined above, Lewis’ Gunners switch does now appear to be on the verge of completion.

As per the reliable Charles Watts of Goal, Arsenal are hopeful of putting the finishing touches on the transfer following the club’s FA Cup final meeting with Chelsea this weekend.

The winger is said to have impressed during a 2-week trial in north London back in March, with Lewis, who is currently spending time in the English capital, expected to link up with Steve Bould’s Under-23 squad ‘once the paperwork has been finalised.’

Willian latest

In other Arsenal-related news, meanwhile, an update on the situation surrounding Willian has also been forthcoming online this evening.

Chelsea star Willian has been linked with a whole host of clubs of late, ahead of the imminent expiration of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

And, as reported by Blues journalist Simon Phillips (citing Sky Sports), Arsenal are one such outfit expressing a keen interest in the Brazilian.

Significantly, though, it is also claimed that La Liga giants Barcelona, along with Inter Miami and current club Chelsea, have tabled contract offers to Willian.
