Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta backs decision to sell Emiliano Martinez to Aston Villa

Arsenal vs Aston Villa

Sunday’s late Premier League kick off will see Arsenal and Aston Villa face off.

The Gunners head into the tie on the back of yet another dominant display in Europe.

However, Arsenal’s recent league form hasn’t been too impressive – losing two of their last three.

Luckily for the north Londoners, though, Aston Villa have also struggled of late, falling to defeat vs Leeds and Southampton.

Arteta on Martinez

As well as being a crucial clash in terms of league position, the clash at the Emirates also marks the first time Emiliano Martinez will face his former side since departing over the summer.

The Argentine had a sensational few months with Arsenal whilst Bernd Leno was out, playing a key role in the Londoners’ recent FA Cup success.

However, when the German returned, Arteta opted to reinstate him as the no.1.

This eventually led to Martinez, despite his superb form, being shipped off to Villa.

But speaking ahead of Sunday’s game, Mikel Arteta maintains that this was the right decision:

“When we sat down we believed it was the right thing to do. He was still very willing to get the No.1 shirt and play regularly – I think we had to give him the choice to decide where he wanted to play.

“He has earned a lot of respect in this country, he has been here for 10 years and with his performances for us in the last few months, he believed it was the right club for him so I was happy to let him go and make the right decision for his career.

“He has become really hungry, really competitive and was really clear about what he wanted to do in the next chapter of his career so I am sure he will be a success.”
