Robben breaks down

Arjen Robben broke down in tears when interviewed after helping with 2 assists in Groningen’s 4-0 win over FC Emmen this weekend just past.

Robben said that he wanted to help the club which he has missed so much football for this season.

A calf injury has meant he played just his 5th game for the club and his first start.

“I have come a long way, this is what I wanted. I want to help this club and I want to play football. If I can and succeed, then I am very happy. It has been a long and hard road,” he told ESPN.

“It was tough and difficult but I kept fighting. The reward has to come sometime. I had fun, like a child, and it was also important to the team today.”

With 2 games left, Groningen have placed themselves into the play-offs for a possible European spot which Robben will hope to take part in.

Robben is a much loved character and has even been spotted cycling home from matches.

Robben open to Euros call-up

Despite his age of 37, Robben has opened up the call to Frank de Boer of playing at the European Championships this summer.

Asked what he would say if the call came through he said:

“Then I’ll come! When I started this last summer, the Euros was something of my wildest dreams.

“Firstly I want to stay realistic and see how things go in the coming weeks. Then we’ll see further.”

What a scene that would be. But Robben will have some stern competition for a call-up.

Calvin Stengs, Steven Berghuis, Donyell Malen, Ryan Babel and Steven Bergwijn have all seen recent call-ups and the depth continues into the Eredivisie.
