Diallo links up with Man United
Amad Diallo completed a £37m move to Old Trafford from Serie A outfit Atalanta last summer, amid the expectation that he would go on to link up with Man United in January.
And, just over a week into the winter window, the Red Devils officially confirmed that the young winger had indeed joined up with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.
Despite the hefty fee attached to his signature, Diallo actually had very little senior experience under his belt upon joining Manchester United.
So, whilst the Reds remain without a nailed-on first-choice right-winger at present, it was always unlikely that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would hand the former Atalanta man too much first-team football upon his arrival.
And, to this point, this is exactly what has played out.
Diallo has so far featured twice for United’s under-23 side, the latter of which saw the Ivorian bag a hat-trick of assists, along with a goal.
In terms of senior minutes, Diallo would be handed his debut for United on Thursday against Real Sociedad, notching seven minutes of action.
Diallo compared to Mahrez
Despite his very limited football since joining United, though, the Ivorian appears to have had a big impact on some Man United players already.
When speaking recently, United left-back Luke Shaw was full of praise for the winger:
“He’s still so young but he’s come into training and you can tell he’s got confidence you can tell by the way he plays.
“His first touch is brilliant the way he takes the ball and drives at players, he’s got great skill.
“He’s very young and still got a long way to go but you can tell already that he’s going to be one for the future.
“I’m sure he’s not far away from getting a first-team appearance – he’s a wonderful talent and already a wonderful player. I’m sure the fans are looking forward to seeing him on the pitch soon.”
Shaw then went on to reveal that Harry Maguire had compared Diallo to his former teammate and current Manchester City star, Riyad Mahrez:
“It was interesting because Harry said to me the other day that he reminded him of Mahrez, when he was at Leicester – really quick, skilful, agility, he can turn really quick and has got great skills.
Shaw also stated that he to sees them similarities between Diallo and Mahrez:
“I would agree with Harry, he does remind me of Mahrez, even the way Mahrez plays now – I’ve seen the qualities that Amad obviously has and what he’s shown in training.”
