‘A dream come true’ – Greenwood & Tierney among PL stars hopeful of Lionel Messi arrival

A pair of Premier League stars have today revealed their hope that Lionel Messi will, in the end, make the move to England this summer.

Messi wants out

Messi’s future has of course proven the talking point of world football over the last week.

This comes with the Argentine’s place at the Camp Nou appearing genuinely up in the air ahead of the new season.

On the back of Barcelona’s humiliating Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich last month, murmurs quickly began to circulate that Messi had become completely fed up with the direction of his long-time club.

And this, in turn, was followed by the bombshell confirmation a week ago today that the veteran had informed the Blaugrana board of his desire to move on this summer:

‘Hopefully’

The days since Messi’s plea, meanwhile, have inevitably seen speculation rife in the media regarding just where the South American could end up.

The likes of PSG, Inter Milan and Juventus have all been tipped as potential destinations for the 6-time Ballon d’Or winner.

To this point, however, the outfit by far most persistently linked have been Manchester City.

An Etihad switch would of course see Messi reunite with former boss Pep Guardiola, under whom the 33-year-old enjoyed some of the finest years of his career.

And, as outlined above, despite the fact that such a move coming to fruition would see them forced to compete against one of the finest to ever lace up a pair of boots, two of the Premier League’s stars have today revealed their excitement at the prospect of Messi taking his talents to England.

First up is Mason Greenwood.

Speaking during a video conference whilst on international duty, Manchester United starlet Greenwood admitted that it would mark a ‘dream come true’ to take to the pitch against Barcelona’s talisman:

‘Obviously it’d be amazing to come up against him. All young footballers know about Messi.’

‘To be on the same pitch playing against him would be another dream come true – not just for me, for everyone.’

‘Having someone that high profile coming to the Premier League would be a big thing.’

The 2nd player to have endorsed a potential Messi-Premier League switch, meanwhile, is Kieran Tierney.

Arsenal stopper Tierney has previous experience of facing off against Argentina’s finest, during the Scot’s time with Celtic.

And, though the 23-year-old admits that he was ‘nowhere near’ the standard required to keep Messi at bay at the time, Tierney is keen on the prospect of testing his improved talents against the Manchester City target ‘a couple of times a season’ over the years to come:

‘I kinda played him before, I was marking him but I was nowhere near him, I was miles off it.’

‘I don’t know what’s going to happen with him, obviously you see the links with Man City.’

‘It would be the biggest challenge of my career, playing against him a couple of times a season, hopefully.’
